Radio-frequency identification (RFID) is an automatic identification method. It is a technology that has existed for decades. At a simple level, it is a technology that involves tags that emit radio signals and devices called readers that pick up the signal.

Types of RFID Tags

  • Passive: These have no internal power supply. The minute electrical current induced in the antenna by the incoming radio frequency signal provides just enough power for the integrated circuit in the tag to power up and transmit a response.
  • Active: Active RFID tags have their own internal power source, which is used to power the integrated circuits and to broadcast the response signal to the reader. Communications from active tags to readers is typically much more reliable than from passive tags.
  • Semi-passive: Semi-passive tags, also called semi-active tags, are similar to active tags in that they have their own power source, but the battery only powers the microchip and does not power the broadcasting of a signal. These tags offer greater sensitivity than passive tags, longer battery powered life cycle than active tags and can perform active functions.

RFID vs. Barcodes

RFID is not an 'imporved' version of barcodes. There are some significant advcantages of RFID:

  • RFID device does not need to be positioned precisely relative to the scanner. can be read from a distance, right through your clothes, wallet, backpack or purse.
  • With RFID technology each item can have a different code and that can be linked to the person. For example, 10 pieces of the same product could have a different RFID tag and they can be tracked independently. This is not possible using current UPC barcodes.

How strong is RF signal?

RFIS uses very low power signal and it's not harmful to environment or to humans. But RF signals easily pass through walls, grease, oil, snow and other objects and tags can be read through these barriers.
